CFS Mover and Shaker: Lamine Thiam, Georgetown University ’23

BlackGen Capital is a National, Minority led student investment fund and Business organization with chapters on college campuses across the country. A new chapter at Georgetown University aims to provide members the educational and career opportunities to succeed within careers in the financial services industry alongside many others. Students can also use the knowledge garnered for their personal finance and investment goals.

At a primarily white institution (PWI) like Georgetown, it can be challenging for underrepresented minorities to feel accepted within different spaces across its campus. This particular issue is exacerbated within the school’s pre-professional club culture. These student-run organizations are meant to provide students exposure, experience, and opportunities to a plethora of career fields, usually within the business world. Still, they are often selective with inequitable application processes for minority and first-generation students.

After discovering an organization that successfully tackled these problems at Cornell University, the co-founders, Patrick Brito, Kevin Villafranca, and Lamine Thiam expressed interest in bringing a chapter to Georgetown and were successful in doing so. The goals of this newfound club were to provide an inclusive club culture with an equitable application process for all incoming students to provide members the education and experience necessary to be successful for any future opportunities and provide exposure and career opportunities for its members.

Sources of funds come from sponsors as well as the Universities.
