The Month of June
As an Independent Educational Consultant (IEC), the month of June is a VERY busy month! Why? We are reviewing transcripts, score reports, creating college lists, and more. We love every step of the process but there is something special about working with a new group of students, then watching them grow and mature over the next several months. It is a time when both dreams and reality collide.
Our class of 2020 just received their first major assignment – the Common App personal statement/essay. This year like last, they have seven (7) engaging essay prompts to choose from whereby they can tell their story, introduce themselves, more often than not to complete strangers in College Admission Departments across the country. This is their time to shine, to let others know what makes them unique and most importantly why they should be considered for admission to an institution. No matter the student’s level of writing, we pride ourselves on ensuring that they complete their time with us by becoming a better, more thoughtful, and an overall more skilled writer. Undoubtedly, there will be multiple drafts and feedback on the path to “Voila, it’s done!”
Throughout these summer months, the students and IEC learn a lot about one another and are then, better prepared to tackle the supplemental essays that may be required by each college. It isn’t unusual for a college to require two (2)+ supplemental essays with varying prompts and word requirements. Many of these prompts will be announced by August 1st, not coincidentally at the same time the new version of the common app is made available. To aid our students, we use two college planning applications in our day to day practice at NO additional costs to our Clients.
In summary, working hard throughout the months of June and July will make the fall semester of the senior year far less stressful. How cool is that?!!!
